Flexibility in Action! Switching up the Routine
Habits can be very helpful to us. Healthy habits that keep us safe, healthy and thriving are quite beneficial. However, it’s still important to be flexible with them. Why? Because life is full of unexpected surprises. When one pops up, we have to have the experience and coping strategies to be ready for it. If we stick too closely to our habits, any variation from it can create a feeling of panic. We don’t need that in our lives, nor do our kids. Try these fun activities with your learner! Get creative and find what brings them joy. Keep experimenting and HAVE FUN!

Make a tent!
Make a tent in the living room with blankets, and play, read, or eat a snack in it. The opportunities are endless!

Have a Backwards Day!
If your learner has a typical routine they follow, create a game around having a “backwards day!” Do the same routine but in reverse order.

Give it a theme!
Give a normal routine a fun spin by giving it a theme! Brush teeth like a pirate! Wash dishes like mer-people! Clean the room like dinosaurs!

Have a picnic!
Have a picnic in the living room, backyard, or at the park with kid-friendly food. Bring out toys or favorite games to enjoy before or after eating if those activities are preferred

Mix up the location of a routine!
For example, brush teeth in a different bathroom or even at the kitchen sink!

Make a non-preferred task more fun!
Do a task such as homework outside, at a park, or standing up. This builds flexibility while making a less preferred task more fun!
