About Me

Greetings! My name is Elizabeth Bart, BCBA. (You can call me Liz.) I have been providing support for neurodivergent individuals for over 30 years. I am also a mom of 2 boys, a pup named Charlie, and 2 red-eared slider turtles named Ashley and Audrey.

Red Slider Steps Out is my first published picture book. However, I have been developing visual supports, stories, and other resources for my learners for decades. I have also been creating online resources through the Boom™ Learning website since 2020.

If you want to learn more about Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), want access to more visual supports, or are interested in my Boom Learning store, check out my sister website, Lisneyland ABA. It’s still me, just more stuff.

Why this book?

I wrote the Little Red Slider Steps Out book because I know how extremely difficult it is to teach abstract concepts like psychological flexibility. Concepts such as this require time and patience to teach. It involves a great deal of experiential learning to make the biggest impact. More than anything, acquiring the skill requires the learner’s motivation!

You can try to teach flexibility all day long, but if your learner doesn’t believe it matters, they will not put these lessons into practice when you’re not around. Adults must see the benefits of making positive changes in their lives before they get started, right? Children are people, too! Kids need to repeatedly hear about and experience the benefits of the lessons they are taught in order to make lasting changes.

Red is a little guy just like so many of our guys and gals. He is comfortable with the known, and does not see the point of change. His mom gives him a bit of a nudge, but ultimately, it was his choice to be brave and give it a try. He is given a gift that he will never forget when he step out of his comfort zone.

I hope this book takes your learner one more step in their journey to discovering that there is more to life than the familiar. Don’t forget to try the activities in the website, because experience is the best teacher.
